Motherhood Medicine's Miracle Belly Butter

When I was in high school my body changed rather quickly and I got some stretch marks on my inner thighs and a few on my hips. At first, they were red and purple and hard for me to accept. Years went by and they eventually faded, although the texture of my skin in those areas is still different. In summary, I am prone to stretch marks.

Fast forward to becoming pregnant: I wanted to do my best to lessen or avoid getting stretch marks on my abdomen, breasts, hips, and other areas. I developed a batch of body butter that went on smoothly, was made of just a few ingredients, smelled good, and would do the job. While genetics play a big part in the development of stretch marks or not, I wanted to give it my best to keep my skin as healthy as possible.

There are four essential ingredients in this recipe that are all easy to acquire (or you probably already have them in your bathroom).

  1. Shea Butter: This is a skin "superfood" that deeply moisturizes and helps maintain the skin's integrity by aiding in skin regeneration and healing.
  2. Coconut Oil: Softens skin, repairs damage, and supports tissue healing.
  3. Cocoa Butter: Extremely moisturizing, smells great, and works as a fantastic emollient.
  4. Vitamin E: Also a skin "superfood" vitamin E is known for its incredible role in skin health.

I whipped up a few batches of Belly Butter and stored them in mason jars to be used throughout my pregnancy. I tried to apply the butter twice a day--once immediately after showering in the morning, and once before bed. I focused mainly on my abdomen and breasts, and whatever I had leftover on my hands I would rub on my hips and outer thighs.

The results of using this Belly Butter were remarkable. At my maternity photoshoot at 9 months pregnant (picture of the belly above is mine to prove it!) I didn't have a single stretch mark. In the last couple of weeks before my son was born, he had a rapid growth spurt and I did get some marks, but the fact that my skin held up so well throughout the pregnancy despite my predisposition to stretch marks was fantastic.

Below is the recipe I used. Feel free to add 5-10 drops of essential oils to make it your own!

Motherhood Medicine's Miracle Belly Butter

  1. Place 2 tablespoons of shea butter, coconut oil, and cocoa butter in a small thick-bottomed pan .
  2. Add 10-15 drops of Vitamin E to the pan, and stir over low heat until ingredients have melted.
  3. Whisk ingredients together until combined and smooth.
  4. Pour into a mason jar, and leave alone until it has completely cooled.
  5. Enjoy!
