My Favorite Preconception Supplements

One of the most common questions I encounter is what supplements women should be taking to optimize their pregnancy.

For women trying to get pregnant, who are currently pregnant, or are postpartum, the recommendations always start the same: with diet

What you choose to nourish your body with directly dictates the supplements you may require. If you are eating a well balanced nutrient dense diet, your essential supplements will be fewer (if any) than if you are eating a carbohydrate rich standard American diet. Regardless, there are a few key supplements that no matter what your diet looks like, I tend to always recommend. The following are my favorite supplements for excellent preconception health:

  1. Prenatal vitamin: Prenatal vitamins are a lovely way to insure you are getting the proper amounts of nutrients. It is important to chose a high quality prenatal, preferably with folate instead of folic acid. My favorite prenatal are Metagenics Wellness Essentials for Pregnancy or Innate Baby & Me.
  2. Magnesium: Magnesium is an incredible nutrient and serves hundreds of roles in the body. It is crucial to build up magnesium stores before becoming pregnant. This can help reduce morning sickness, leg cramps, and fluid retention while boosting your mood and promoting restful sleep. This is my top choice: Pure Encapsulations Magnesium Glycinate
  3. Probiotic: Probiotics are great for gut health, mood, proper digestion, and more. Imbalance of proper gut bacteria have been linked to behavioral disorders, autism, ADD and ADHD, and the gut health of our children starts with the gut health of the mother. It is important to rotate your probiotic every couple of months. These are my top choices: Klaire Labs or Innate Clinical Strength
  4. Chlorella: Chlorella binds toxins and heavy metals and flushes them from the body. Chlorella is especially good at removing mercury, which has been known to cause complications during pregnancy. Additionally, chlorella is a superfood that is rich in countless essential nutrients that keep our bodies in tip top shape. My favorite tablets are Sun Chlorella, but you can also use a liquid form and add to yoour water throughout the day (don’t worry it doesn’t have a bad taste!).
  5. Fish oils: Fish oils are crucial during pregnancy for helping your baby develop their brain and nervous system. Getting the right amount of EPA and DHA is important, and some brands also provide important nutrients like vitamin A and vitamin D as well. My favorite brands are Fermented Cod Liver Oil,  or Metagenics EPA-DHA
