Mindful Ways to Beat Depletion + the Winter Blues
After the hustle + high energy of the holidays and start of the new year, by february most of us are feeling a bit tapped out…
Add in the fact that this Winter has been incredibly cold (even here in California!) and you have yourself the perfect recipe for depletion. And how does depletion show up for most of us in Winter? The winter blues.
Now, the cause of depletion is multifactorial and the effect looks different for everyone. But, one common thread is the feeling of being a bit lost, uninspired, off-track, or bored. Sound familiar?
Here are a few easy ways to remedy the winter blues and keep us feeling strong through this last stretch of Winter:
Nourish yourself appropriately. I feel like I’m always talking about food, and honestly, I am. What we put into our bodies has a direct impact on how we feel on a mental, physical, and even spiritual level. January is usually rich with well-intended new year diet plans that usually crash and burn by February, leaving us feeling not only depleted, but defeated. Recognize what you truly need at this time. Again, the stress of the whole “new year, new me” marketing ploy is incredibly toxic. We end up spending a ton of money, time, and emotional collateral trying to force ourselves into someone who we are not. Yes its a new year, and yes it is the SAME you! Now that the dust from the new year has settled, really take inventory of what you have and what you need to live your best life. Make a sustainable and realistic plan that can lead you into Spring.
Stay social. Our calendars tend to fall a bit flat after the holidays, and this can make a big impact on our mood and inspiration. Although the days are still short and cold, make an effort to connect with friends and community on a regular basis (but make sure to balance it with lots of alone time and self care!).
Spend time outdoors in the sun. Like food, this is another topic I am always talking about—and for good reason. Getting outdoors, soaking up the rays of the sun and breathing fresh air works wonders for us year round, but especially in the Winter. Lack of vitamin D from limited sun exposure takes a toll on our immunity and mental health, and although vitamin D supplements do help, they don’t work as well as good ol’ sunshine. Commit to spending at least 15 minutes outside every day and take note of the change. You won’t regret it!
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!! Winter’s icy chill coupled with being blasted by heaters in the home, office, and car leave us bone dry both inside and out. Dry skin is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to dehydration in the Winter! When we are parched on a cellular level, the normal functioning of our mind, body, and spirit gets a bit wonky. The best remedy is to drink ample amounts of water throughout the day, but we often need additional support as well. This is when the contents of your seasonal care package come in!
